"Inquiring Minds Want to Know"

Brain Cells
Fat Cell
Recently, I visited the Ask a Scientist website in search of an answer to one a question.  The question that I posed to the scientists was  “Why do brain cells die and cannot be regenerated and fat cells do not die?”  I was concerned to find out that I could lose brain cells, however; my fat cells are destined to stay with me unless I had them surgically removed.  This is quite disturbing to say the least.  I would prefer retaining my brain cells and losing some fat cells.  As soon as I receive a response from the Ask a Scientist website, I will post it.

Meanwhile, I am including a website that students may find engaging.  The link is http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/gamesactivities/plantanimaldif.html

  1. I laughed reading your post. I did not know that fact about fat cells, but I did know that brain cells die and that we have enough to replace them. (I often wonder in my "forgetful" moments if that is really true!)

So, why is it that I can lose weight, then gain it back. Did I not, then, lose off fat cells and grow some more?

    1. Janie,
Unfortunately, you do not lose fat cells. They expand when you gain weight, and shrink when you lose weight. To lose fat cells you will have to have surgery such as liposuction.

  2. Alethea, Can fat cells multiply? I was just curious. I know that they can shrink. If they can multiply, I am in big trouble. I have enough problems trying to shrink the one's I have. I know that we are constantly losing brain cells. I remember in health class, my teacher said that every time you do drugs or alcohol you lose millions of brain cells. I am not sure of the exact number. She never really told us. However, it scared most of us for quite a while. Also, thank you for the website link. I am going to try it right now.

    1. Cheryl,
You are welcome. Fat cells only multiply when there is an extreme amount of weight gain. Otherwise, fat cells do not multiply.
